Ines says...Mix It Up

Ines

Ines de la Fressange's is one of France's beloved fashionistas. I have done a series of posts based on her book, "Parisian Chic". Here is the sixth installment. To view the entire series please click here.

Ines says....
Don't go for the head to toe! This is the Parisian war-cry! The pursuit of off-beat chic is a Parisian's favorite sport. Two or three zany details can transport a look with madly successful results. Here are Ines de la Fressange's Top Ten ideas for an offbeat look a la Parisienne....

Put an evening dress with a straw handbag  (not with a gold clutch)

Put a tux jacket with sneakers (not femme fatale stilettos).

Put a chiffon print dress with battered biker books and not with brand-new ballet flats.

A pearl necklace would look better with a rock n' roll t-shirt vs. with a simple shift dress.

An evening dress with an ultra plain open-toed sandals is so much more fun than paring it with the predictable gem encrusted evening variety.

                         (Merci':hautevenueparis)

Loafers with shorts and long socks instead of with long slacks and no socks.

I don't even think Ines herself can pull off this look....

                                             but these girls can.....
                       (Merci':WeekendAttire)

A diamond necklace paired with a denim shirt during the day and not with a black dress at night.

(Merci':ReasonstoBreathe)

A sequined  sweater with men's trousers not with a skirt.

A pencil skirt with ballet flats and not with heels.

Jeans with gem encrusted sandals and not with with sneakers

Ines discusses "Dressing Your Age"...

Ines has some interesting things to say on this topic. She dictates never to allow yourself to get stuck in a style adopted at one particular age of your life because it will age you instantly.

She thinks this is especially dangerous once you past 40 when it is tempting to keep dressing as you did when you were 30. Usually in your 40's this is the time in your life when you are feeling your best. You are comfortable in your own skin, and life is full of possibilities and good things- an exciting career, children, love, etc. When you turn 40 you often feel young and mature at  the same time and you don't want it to stop.

At 40 many women start asking themselves...can I still get away with this? Here are some basic rules.

Stay interested.
