The One Room Challenge! Week One

A few of us design oriented bloggers decided to motivate together to make some of our home renovation goals for 2012 a reality vs. just another wish list item for the year. I liken it to beginning a gym routine with a partner or two. When you commit to others you show up and procrastinate less.

Hence, The One Room Challenge! Every Wednesday for the next six weeks you can follow our process, projects, and pride as we move to the final reveal of the rooms we have chosen to redo on Wednesday Week 6!

The first project on my list this year is to update my son's bedroom....after all, as he has astutely pointed out, he is maturing fast and his room decor better catch up! Luckily, he has offered to assist me in making this happen. He is very interested in design and artistic in nature so I have a real design partner for this makeover!

My husband has been drafted for the initial phase (dismantling, wall repair and prep, painting, furniture movement, etc). After those tasks are completed he can have his weekends back while my son and I move on to the fun zhooshing part of the makeover.

So here is where we begin...the before shot...

Monsieur R (as I will affectionately refer to him) doesn't "dig" the yellow and red. He is a true blue guy...(comes by that one genetically as it is my FAVE color too). He favors tan and gray as accents. He likes metals and woods and inspiration from nature.

We honed in on the descriptive term "RL Industrial Hip" (Ralph Lauren) as the new moniker for his design style. He is big fan of Abercrombie & Fitch clothing so we might layer the space with a few inspirational elements from them as well. The following photos all have items that we find interesting as we begin to develop our specific plan...

We have settled on this color blue for the walls....Benjamin Moore- Mysterious AF 565....

These are a few of the elements we want to introduce into the space....  We like a modern profile leather chair but with worn leather...or it will have to get that "worn-look" naturally. We also have a great idea for some tree trunks collected curbside to make an end table or two next to the leather chair

Monsieur R is all about Art and he loves animal wall sculptures with cool graphic treatements.

We are looking for a low profile old trunk that we can use as an ottoman...

This swivel chair from IKEA is cool, comfortable and functions well
...this is a must have purchase in dark blue for his mahogany desk. The industrial lighting at IKEA will work great in the space as well.

These pics give you a little hint of the "captain's bed" we are configuring...not these fabrics (of course) but the overall construction and materials...

Old Maps, Family Pictures, and Antiques will also be collected and hung over time as we comb flea markets and antique shops and our photo albums.

I'd like to take some fun t-shirts and make decorative pillows out of them as well...

So, as you can see we have a lot of work to do....but a lot of inspiration is the ultimate motivator and we have that in droves...next Wednesday I will share our progress and projects underway!
