When devastating Hurricane Ike hit Galveston in 2008 it buried most of the island under water....as a result many of the islands magnificent old oak trees were lost due to how much sea salt devasted their roots....but the clever residents of the island decided to pay tribute to these trees by having statues carved out of them and placing them where the trees stood....here is an example of how large this tree's base was...now it is represented by this garden guard dog!
This little froggy was once a tree as well....both he and the pooch above are joining in the Mardi Gras festivities with their bead decorations...
as are many of the fences around town....
Here is some more tree art as a result of the storm...this one pays tribute to a former owners famous past....
Hopefully you can read this but King Wallis Vidor was one of the directors of the Wizard of Oz and he was born in this house....so the new owners paid tribute in their tree carving to his legacy.
