The Walnut Room...A Chicago Classic!

The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907.

Located on the 7th floor of Macy’s (formerly the iconic Marshall Field flagship store) on State Street the Walnut Room is the first restaurant ever opened in a department store...

inside the dining room on a normal day...

Visiting this year....during the holidays....

With wood paneling imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers, the 17,000 square foot dining room is both elegant and comfortable with standards such as Mrs. Hering's chicken pot pie, or french onion soup.

Many Chicagoans and tourists make a visit to the Walnut Room an annual event during the holidays.

Crowds flock to the store to visit the holiday windows that have magical stories depicted creatively every year and reservations are made months in advance to sit under the large tree in the Walnut Room dining room.

An assortment of tree decorations throughout the years...

The store is just a wonderful representation of turn of the century architecture and when inside you can just feel what it would have been like shopping there for the past hundred years. A fabulous view... from the ground floor looking up... through all the floors to the magnificent skylight.

The view from one of the top floors of the store....

I love standing on the worn original oak floors looking at the dining room from this vantage point...imagining the generations of families who have created holiday memories in this wonderful place....tomorrow I will feature the delightful holiday shop within the store I try to visit every year!

  1. The "Era" of Department Store Restaurants and Holiday decor are magical! I am delighted to see that it still exists at Marshall Field and Company in Chicago. As a child growing up in the NY suburbs I loved my trips to the City with my Grandmother to enjoy Lunch at Lord and Taylor's Bird Cage Restaurant and all the decorations. As a very, very young child, there was a store in Brooklyn that had a magical restaurtant with a Merry-go-Round! What a sight to a 4 year old. I can relive it now as I write this!!!!
